The history of this majestic cathedral dates back to the 13th century.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1229, the troops of James I of Aragon conquered the island of Mallorca and immediately began construction of the cathedral. The works began under the direction of Bishop Berenguer de Palou and were to last almost 400 years.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the centuries, the plans for the cathedral underwent many changes. At 14th century, the choir was completed in the Gothic style. At In the 15th century the nave of the church was built, but it was interrupted when work began on the chapel of St. Anthony. At 16th century, the monastery and the chapter house was completed.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A significant event in the history of the cathedral was the earthquake of 1851, which caused considerable damage and led to the fact that the restoration work was not completed until 1891. The work was supervised by the Catalan architect Antoni Gaud\u00ed, who played an important role in the restoration of the cathedral&#8217;s facade.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The impressive entrance portal of the cathedral was completed in the 20th century. The portal, designed by Antoni Gaud\u00ed, features an elaborate relief depicting the coronation of the Virgin Mary by Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Palma de Mallorca Cathedral is famous for its size and beauty. The interior of the cathedral is decorated with many works of art and sculptures. Particularly noteworthy is the famous Rose Window, considered one of the largest Gothic windows in the world.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2007, the Cathedral of Palma de Mallorca was officially elevated to basilica status by King Juan Carlos I, underlining its importance as a religious center.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, Palma de Mallorca Cathedral is a major attraction for tourists and locals alike.
