The history of Porto Cristo

It is also said that Porto Cristo owes its name to a sailor who was rescued in 1260 after a shipwreck off the bay of Porto Cristo in Menorca (Balearic Islands). According to legend, he then founded a town on land called “Cristo”, where he settled with his wife Elena and their children – hence the locals still call the place “Porto”, which means port, and thus “Porto Cristo”.

The Cuevas del Drach are a cave system on the island of Mallorca. The caves are named after the Drach, an extinct species of horse that lived in the area thousands of years ago. The caves extend for more than 16 km and contain the largest underground lake in Europe.

The passages were inhabited by people as early as 6500 BC, but were abandoned around 1000 AD for fear of the Christians, who considered them evil places where witches gathered. The locals went there at night and lit fires to drive away the evil spirits.
