No wonder this route enjoys an almost mythical status among cyclists. The landscape alone, which stretches over the longest peninsula of the island, is one of the most spectacular in Mallorca. The route then winds through fragrant pine forest and back over rugged peaks to end at the Formentor lighthouse and enjoy a breathtaking sea panorama. It’s a 37km round trip, so a short detour to the exquisite Formentor beach along the way is recommended.

Most experienced cyclists consider this to be Mallorca’s ultimate route – but at 115 km and nearly 2,500 meters of elevation gain, it’s not for the faint of heart. Sa Calobra has become synonymous with cycling in Mallorca, and its climb is one of the toughest on the island. But it’s the iconic hairpin curves that wind through the breathtaking landscape that make this route a must for cyclists. The 38 km route starts in picturesque Port de Soller and takes about three hours to pass Puig Major, Mallorca’s highest mountain.

Alaro This 34 km route, known as the Orient Loop, passes through three of the most beautiful pueblos through some of the most lush landscapes in central Mallorca. The circuit mostly circles the foot of the Sierra Puig D’Alaro with largely mild gradients and well-maintained roads. There is only one serious pain point – climbing the Coll d’Orient – before descending to the village of the same name. Dense pine forests, dramatic mountain passes and vast plains make for one of the most varied and enjoyable cycling routes in the Balearics.

With a smooth and flat bike-friendly path that runs the entire length, this is one of the least challenging routes. Start near the ferry port in Porto Pi and enjoy a leisurely bike ride along the bay of Palma, with the shimmering sea on one side and a varied urban landscape on the other. The 17 km route takes you past the famous Gothic cathedral, through trendy Portixol and past several picturesque beaches. The biggest challenge is not getting so distracted that you stop looking out for the other cyclists, inline skaters and runners.

6. Arenal to Llucmajor to Arenal

This is mostly a flat loop through Mallorca’s quiet rural south, but at 60km it can feel like a slog for less experienced riders. From Arenal, you’ll drive along the coastal road to Cap Blanc before making a loop to pass by Capocorb, one of the most impressive Talayotic sites on the island. The way back is via sleepy Llucmajor, with some great views from the cliffs over the Bay of Palma as you reach the coast.

7. Valldemossa to Soller

The main event on this popular route is the Col de Soller – a magnificent climb and descent with more than 50 hairpin bends that takes you up almost 500m through the picturesque mountain pass. The 30 km can be covered in less than two hours, or you can return via the coastal path that winds through the mountain village of Deia, for a four-hour round trip that you’ll be talking about for months to come.

8. Felanitx to Puig de San Salvador

Thanks to its frequent and spectacular views, this climb is one of the best in Mallorca. Start by leaving the typical Mallorcan village of Felanitx to the east, and soon you’ll cross 5 km of steep incline and some razor-sharp curves. It’s a stunning landscape, but from the top you’re really treated to breathtaking views over most of the island.

9. Manacor to Arta

This is another long but leisurely drive, connecting the less pretty town of Manacor with the rather pretty Arta. The route, mainly gravel, runs along the Vias Verdes, former railroad lines that were converted into a bike path in 2015. It winds through a mostly flat landscape that alternates between vast, fertile plains and forests of wild olive and pine trees. It’s a safe off-road option, perfect for casual cyclists and even young children (for whom the whole 29 km might be a stretch).

Cala Figuera is one of the working class neighborhoods of the island. Today and historically acting as a fishing port, this is the place where you want to buy fresh seafood, among other things. The harbor is a fun place to hang out and watch the action, but this is not the place to be if you want to swim. However, if you are interested in diving, Cala Figuera has a diving school that can take you to the depths of the beautiful, clear blue Mediterranean waters.

With excellent infrastructure, an abundance of bike-friendly hotels and specialized bike stores all over the island, it’s easy to organize your own Mallorca cycling vacation. The manageable size of Mallorca also means you’re never too far from civilization and that forgotten breakdown kit.
