Smoking on Mallorca: current regulations for beaches and restaurants

Mallorca has taken significant steps in recent years to protect non-smokers and the environment. The introduction of smoke-free zones on beaches and the adaptation of regulations in gastronomy reflect the growing awareness of health and environmental protection.

Smoke-free beaches on Mallorca

Since 2019, the Balearic health authority has been promoting the campaign “Platges sense fum, platges saludables” (smoke-free beaches are healthy beaches). The aim is to reduce exposure to cigarette butts and protect non-smokers from passive smoking. Numerous municipalities have now joined this initiative.

List of smoke-free beaches (as of April 2025)

  • Palma de Mallorca: Cala Estància, El Molinar (Portixol harbor to Playa Ciudad)

  • West coast: Cala Deià, Santa Ponça, Playa la Romana (Playa des Morts), Platja Es Carregador, Camp de Mar, S’Arenal, Platja de Sant Elm

  • North coast: Platja de Sant Joan, Colònia de Sant Pere, Platja de Formentor, Platja d’Albercutx, Cala Barques, Cala Molins, Platja del Port de Pollença, Platja de Sóller, Playa del Mònaco (Sóller)

  • East coast: Cala Anguila, Sa Platgeta in Colonia de Sant Pere, Playa de Muro, Platja de Son Bauló, Cala Mitjana,

  • South coast: Caló des Moro, Cala Sa Nau, Cala Ferrera, Cala Marçal, Platja de Cala Galiota, Es Port (ses Salines), Arenal Portocolom

For example, in March 2024, a smoking ban was introduced at the popular Playa de Muro, which applies to the so-called section 2 of the beach.

Consequences of violations

Although the smoke-free beaches are a campaign, municipalities can prohibit smoking at the seaside via the waste ordinance. Failure to comply may result in a fine of up to 2000 euros, depending on the location.

Smoking in the catering trade

Smoking on the terraces and outdoor areas of restaurants has been permitted again since July 2023. However, it is at the discretion of the respective catering establishment whether smoking is permitted. Many restaurants provide ashtrays, while others prohibit smoking out of consideration for non-smokers.

Environmental aspects and recommendations

Cigarette butts are not biodegradable and can pollute the sea and sand. They contain toxic, carcinogenic substances that can end up in the soil and the Mediterranean Sea. Smoke-free beaches help to reduce this environmental impact.

Recommendation: Smokers should not dispose of their cigarette butts in the sand or water. Mobile ashtrays or the bins provided on the beaches offer an environmentally friendly disposal option.

Conclusion

Mallorca is increasingly focusing on smoke-free zones, especially on beaches, in order to protect the environment and allow non-smokers a pleasant stay. Smokers should inform themselves locally about the applicable regulations and show consideration for their fellow human beings and nature.

Note: The information is based on the status as of April 2025 and is subject to change. It is recommended that you check the current regulations before you travel.

BAC limit on Mallorca: current regulations, penalties and recommendations for drivers

Mallorca is not only known for its stunning beaches and vibrant culture, but also for its strict traffic rules, especially when it comes to drink driving. To ensure both safety on the roads and avoid legal consequences, it is crucial to know the current regulations on the drink-drive limit.

Legal alcohol limits on Mallorca

In Spain, and therefore also in Mallorca, the following legal blood alcohol limits apply.

  • General drivers: Maximum 0.5 ‰ in the blood.

  • Novice drivers (first two years) and professional drivers: maximum 0.3 ‰ in the blood.

These values correspond to the European average and are intended to increase road safety.

Sanctions for exceeding the blood alcohol limit

Driving under the influence of alcohol is severely punished in Spain. The penalties vary depending on the level of alcohol measured.

  • 0.5 ‰ to 1.2 ‰: Fines between €500 and €1,000, possible driving bans.

  • Over 1.2 ‰: fines or imprisonment, mandatory driving ban.

These penalties apply to both locals and tourists. In addition, Spanish fines of €70 or more can be enforced in Germany.

Effects on the driver’s license

The Spanish police can temporarily confiscate the driver’s license for violations of the blood alcohol limit. The license will then be forwarded to the competent German authority, which will decide on further measures. In serious cases, this can lead to a driving ban or the withdrawal of the driver’s license in Germany.

Blood alcohol limit for cyclists

Cyclists on Mallorca are also subject to the 0.5 ‰ blood alcohol limit. Fines of €500 or more may be imposed if this is exceeded. In the event of an accident, the penalties can be significantly higher.

Recommendations for tourists

  • Abstaining from alcohol: To avoid legal consequences, you should abstain completely from drinking and driving.

  • Use of cabs or public transportation: After consuming alcohol, it is advisable to use alternative means of transportation.

  • Find out about local laws: Before setting off, you should find out about the current traffic regulations.

Conclusion

Compliance with the drink-drive limit on Mallorca is crucial for your own safety and that of other road users. Tourists should be aware of the strict regulations and act responsibly in order to enjoy their stay on the island without any worries.
